Fair Tax is the main issue

For the record, I'm a Republican.  I was able to catch the debate in Nevada on CSPAN and found it very interesting.  Mike Gravel was by far the only democratic candidate that has any chance getting my vote in the coming election.  He's an outspoken guy that has a record of fighting corruption in the past.  It really comes down to a single issue for me, though, and it's probably not the one you think.  So far Mike is the only mainstream candidate to support the Fair Tax.  If no other candidate supports the Fair Tax, then Mike has my vote already.

One thing I noticed on the website here though is that when describing the Fair Tax Prebate, you're given the impression that it is somehow tied to your income.  That's totally incorrect.  Every household in the country would be entitled to the prebate. It has nothing to do with the recipient's need, it's about not taxing the necessities of life, no matter who you are (hence, the "Fair" part).  Also, while the percentage rate has not be firmly established yet, the text on the site here suggests that the rate moves between 19 and 23 percent.  I'm pretty sure that the rate would be fixed to a single rate when the law is actually adopted.  It's this rate that Congress would have the power to change from year to year as needs arose.  But you can see how such an obvious change in the amount of tax we pay would be difficult for Congress to raise surreptitiously like they do with other taxes now (like allowing the AMT to hit many more Americans because it's not indexed for inflation).

So Mike, I hope you just have a few mistakes on the website here and that you actually know how the Fair Tax is constructed.  I would be very disappointed if you just stuck your finger in the wind to find an issue that none of the other candidates support.

Good Luck!

I like the Fair Tax...

Seems that a lot of very articulate people on this forum like it even more than I do. I'm a Gravel supporter as he is a very rare politician in that he would shift things in a very positive direction with regards to foreign relations. We are in trouble as long as the military industrial complex rules our world and we need someone to stand up.

The media won't help, and neither will the so called liberal blogs like DKos and others who are all spellbound by Hillary and Edwards and Obama.

I support Gravel with or without the Fair Tax.
