The real most important reason why education is failing in USA

First of all, Senator Mike Gravel if you're reading this, then thank you for ditching the "Democratic" Party.  Now as to why education is failing let's realize that the Democrats use a symbol (donkey) for their political party and the Republicans use a symbol (elephant) for their political party (the Democrats and Republicans can't comprehend that they're human beings and so they don't use human beings for the symbols of their political parties).  So how can Dems and Repubs claim they know what's best for education when they themselves obviously aren't well educated?

The focus needs to return to humanity

I certainly agree that the focus needs to return to humanity. Our institutions are run riot and out of control. Lately I've been reading Ivan Illich and I recommend him to all others. He clearly saw that it is the institutionalization of our society that has dehumanized us and turned us into cogs in the machine of our own destruction.

Speaking of education, a good place to begin is Deschooling Society if you are interested in Illich's thought. He was a serious man and much of his written work is available, together with some interviews on mp3, at David Tinapple's sit, above.
