What I learned from my trip to VA and PA during the weekend

During the weekend, I went to thr rural parts of Virginia and Pennsylvania. I thought this straitgraphy trip was going to take my mind off things, but it actually accentuated my political distress.

Aside from the disturbing religious books at a gas station, the rusting houses, the depressing factories and the sight of a woman wearing the shirt "thank God I am forgiven" as I was getting out of the bathroom, there were also army recruiting ads, gas prices are pretty high, and the infrastructure is horrible.

Concerning infrastructure, I want to ask myself several questions.

1. The US claims to be the best country in the world, but how come people don't bother indicating a missing exit on a map of the beltway?

2. How come geologists have to have significant driving experience and spend two hours or more to get to a geological site? Isn't there an easier way for an MD geology major to go see Western MD, West Virginia, Loundoun County Va, Shenandoah valley or Central and Southeastern PA?

3. Why do people in rural areas have to be stranded if they don't have a car? Why can't we have trains or buses?

4. How come some roads in PA are unmarked?

5. How come in MD, it takes more time to get somehwere by train or bus than by car?

6. How come in Silver Spring MD, the buses, the train station and the cars all seem to collide against each other? Why were the bus station, the major roads and the train station designed that way?

7. How come we haven't made significant advances on infrastructure after Eisenhower's presidency (the interstate highway dates back to Eisenhower, but it increasingly cannot cope with the huge volumes of traffic and the horrific daily traffic jams)?

8. How come we are neglecting our public transportation system, which is crumbling as I see more and more train breakdowns and rising prices to desperately cover budget deficits (the government doesn't care about infrastructure, but it seems to love the MIC)?

9. If someone lives in North Carolina and studies in Maryland, can we make the commute easier (I know someone who is willing to commute for 5-6 hours to get to campus. Can't we have a train instead that can connect NC and MD?)

People think I care too much, but if Hillary, Obama or McCain win and cause a world depression along with one or two more wars, how will they react?

People think I am too political, but I see some issues every single day of my life. I can't be numb to reality.

Only Gravel seems to really care about the issue of infrastructure. Hillary, Obama and McCain don't care.

Why can't we modernize our infrastructure?

The tax dollars that should go to funding the Department of Transportation go to the MIC instead.

This viscous creature must be stopped.

There's a new book out called The Complex:

How the Mllitary Invades our Everyday Lives. Looks good.

One of the first things I noticed at your first link was something about Disease Hype. I would take issue with that. It's more like they hype minor threats and hide major ones. Whatever suits their purpose. In the case of Lyme there are plenty of reasons to hide it. There are huge profits being made by denying it is common because it presents as so many (sometimes major -- like MS and Parkinson's) illnesses that can be treated with expensive drugs for years. And has so many symptoms you will end up taking a boatload of pills indefinitely.

Another is the origin of this disease is a biolab for germ warfare off of Long Island, called Plum Island. A top Nazi scientist was brought over under Project Paperclip for the purpose of creating weapons to infect Soviet livestock, among others. The security at this lab was very lax. This is detailed in the book Lab 257 by Michael Carroll. The first major outbreak of the disease was in Lyme, Connecticutt, nearby. The government is not going to take responsibility for creating an epidemic (if that's even the only one). And people struck with this disease commonly visit a multitude of doctors over the course of years before they're diagnosed. The most common thing they hear from the medical profession is "we don't have Lyme here." As though insects respect state, or national boundaries! The standard testing is also purposefully inaccurate. And at the most half of those with the disease get the bullseye rash.

In the case of Bird Flu there's another type of conspiracy behind it. Small farmers are being blamed as the ones being "unsanitary" carriers of the disease so that they can be shut down and prevent competition for the corporate factory farms. When it's been proven that the disease has actually been transferred *from* the far filthier corporate operations!

We live in opposite land. They never tell the truth about what the real threats are. They try to frighten us about minor or non-existant threats. And the details behind each lie are manipulated in some way to benefit those with the big bucks -- to our detriment.

I agree that the Military industrial complex is stealing funds away from the country (this country definitely needs to modernize its infrastructure) and militarizing the culture of the United States. The MIC must be stopped in its tracks. I want money spent on infrastructure, education, health care and the environment. I don't want any more war. We don't need wars and soldiers to solve the problems that are plaguing the world.

I also agree that the media is owned by 5 corporations and is trying to monopolize information.

But Israelis are just as human as anyone else and face as many challenges as anyone else. Every State has tensions from birth. I support the Israeli and Palestinian citizens, but I don't support AIPAC because even though decades of force have demonstrated their failure, AIPAC still believes that force works.

Stop scapegoating the Israelis who just happened to be born in a particular part of the world.

I admit that the intent of this topic was a rant about the tragic state of this country's infrastructure. I know that the MIC, the war on drugs and the prison industrial complex are sucking away this country's financial resources.

I mainly wanted to vent because this weekend's trip underscored just how bad the infrastructure is in the US (I can also talk about high gasoline prices).

To everyone that reads this -

Don't confuse the Israeli people and the Israeli government.  Don't confuse the Palestinian people and the Palestinian government.  (That goes for every other country on Earth, too.)  They are in a situation much like the United States, from what I understand.  They have a government that is completely irresponsible and a populace that is full of great people, if not people that completely comprehend what their government is doing.

I'm a Jew, and I hate the anti-Semitism that goes on in the pro Palestinean movement.  I am part of it, but hesistate to get involved in it because of the anti-Semetic undertones (or in some cases overtones) that come with it.

Isn't the whole point of the pro Palestinian movement that people are people, and they should be treated like that, regardless of skin color or where they happen to live?

Same here rossl

I'm in the same boat as you and I find it really disturbing the number of conspiracy theories out there lately that are basically anti-jewish. I also do not condone how Israel is treating the Palestinians, but these theories that are making their way around the web are very dangerous in nature since they are inciting hatred of whole races of people. I completely agree with you that people can't be held completely responsible for what their governments do. If you will all recall about 50% of the country didn't vote for George Bush (even more if you consider that the voting was tampered with). At the very least, that would mean half of us disagreed with Bush's march to war, imperialism and nation-building. I would hate for people in other countries to hold us to task for everything Bush and his criminal administration have been doing.
