Taxation

I like very much most of Mr. Gravel's agenda. But replacing the income tax with a national sales tax is a horrible idea. The income tax can be made progressive, but a sales tax will always fall disproportionately onto the backs of the poor and lower middle class. We need to tax those who can afford to pay it and who have gotten a free ride for the last twenty years -- corporations and the wealthy.

Actually, this is the typical whiny baby democrat solution. Taxing the rich and the corporations is not only unfair, but the burden ultimately falls on the backs of the middle and lower class. It's YOUR line of thinking that has been thrusting this country into an economic meltdown because our current tax system is keeping us from being competitive in a global market, thus, corporations are sending jobs out of the country, and the middle and lower class is suffering.

Maybe take an economics class or read the Fair Tax book and then rethink your position.

Please be a little more circumspect Tscharf

Please be a little more circumspect Tscharf. The suggestion was made in good faith and deserves more than your peremptory, "Off with your head!" condescension.

Converting the entire tax system from income-tax based to sales-tax based in one fell swoop is revolutionary all right, and it is not out of line to ask whether there will be unforeseen consequences to such a revolutionary act.

Eliminating all deductions and all artificial "classes" of income would simplify the present system enough to make it workable. In fact that seems to have been Mike's own approach back when he was an actual player rather than a theoretician. You may call me names, "baby democrat" for instance, as well. Sticks and stones... as we used to say in the playground.

Just take a chill pill. And I will too. And we can smile at our common irascibility and continue or discussion in a lighter vein.

Gary Kleppe doesn't look like "the enemy" to me.

Irony

I find it slightly ironic that you've reprimanded me for my attitude however you support a candidate (Gravel) with the same attitude towards these issues. Gravel attacks every other candidate every chance he gets.

I was never attacking anyone personally, I was simply speaking the truth as I see it. I personally think that the tax issue is our single biggest problem as a country and it needs to be fixed ASAP. I am very passionate about this issue so I may come off as harsh, but I assure you it's all just an attempt to get e very strong point across, not to make anyone feel stupid. If we allow this line of thinking to continue as far as taxing the rich is concerned, we'll never make progress.
