The Alcatraz Conversion Project and The Light Party

Hi everyone!

I've been too busy to contribute much to the forum, but in case anyone was wondering, I'm still as dedicated to the Gravel campaign as I ever was.  Yesterday after giving a little speech about Sen. Mike Gravel to the Harvey Milk club I met a very interesting supporter of the National Initiative for Democracy.  His name is Da Vid, M.D.  He said that he is acquainted with Mike and wanted me to pass on his wishes for the Senator's continued good health.

Mr. Da Vid and his organization, the Global Peace Foundation, have gathered 20,000 signatures to put a proposition on the Feb. 5th ballot.  It reads

"Shall it be the policy of the City of San Francisco to support and facilitate the acquisition of Alcatraz Island for the express purpose of transforming Alcatraz Island into the Global Peace Center ? "

This is from the info packet I was given

"Currently, Alcatraz Island, sacred to the Native American People, is under the jurisdiction of the Federal Dept. of the Interior.  Proposition C is both a challenge and a golden opportunity to initiate a tremendous community project, one which has the potential to positively transform the energy of the entire Bay Area and beyond."

To find out more about this project please visit www.globalpeacefoundation.org

I also checked out the Light Party of which Da Vid and I spoke and was delighted to find the National Initiative for Democracy smack dab in the middle of the seven point platform.  See for yourself!  www.lightparty.com

I'm hoping these links open in new windows but if not, I apologize,   Anyway, just thought I'd share news of my adventures around the Bay.  I found this interesting and hope that you will as well.

I'm sure you're aware

I'm sure you're aware of The American Indian Occupation of Alcatraz Island. The link points to a site with a lot of pictures from the period in the late 60's and early 70's when the island was re-occupied by Indians of All Tribes, Inc.

I think the idea of another party needs discussing. The Light Party seems good. I have founded the Peoples Virtual Party (PVP) in an effort to exploit the existing party machinery of the Republicrat/Demoblican complex, integrate bona fide third parties such as the Greens, and to unite us all in support of citizen legislation and the reform of representational government.

Please don't think I'm trying to take credit for the obvious. I'm happy to take the blame for all that's unclear in the proposition and ask you all to clarify it to the benefit of us all. And of course saying it don't make it so. Which is all I have done. But check it out. We do need a vehicle to get from here to there.

Thanks Dawn for checking in and sharing your encounters in the real world of the Bay Area.

Times have changed. We are going to empower the American people. Let’s work together. I am tough. I’m not afraid. None of this politics as usual. Mike Gravel

PVP

Hi, jfl.  You're right, I'm aware.  Even though the historical events at Alcatraz were over before I was born I have heard a story or two.  Some of the pictures were new to me though, thanks for the link.

Excellent work on the creation of the PVP.  It's clear that the two-party system is no good.  With the focus on two really important and unifying issues (the NI4Dand Campaign Finance Reform) the PVP has a really solid foundation upon which to build.  More and more people cross the Digital Divide every day, we'll need a place to get organized online in order to make the changes we'd like to see in the world.  The Peoples Virtual Party is a good idea, congrats.
