Here is a copy of a message I sent to Clift at his E-Democracy site:
Hi Clift:
I appreciate your input on the E-Democracy solution and I hope you appreciate this tiny bit of constructive criticism: I found your site a bit difficult for the average citizen to comprehend. And isn't he or she the one E-Democracy empowers? Also, direct democracy seeks to do away with corruptible professional politicians, not make us dependent on them.
I suggested a university student project of a parallel government as a Global Online Democracy (G.O.D.). It would not have any authority at first, but as it grows in participation it would have more and more clout in government, finally possibly replacing corruptible representative government itself,. It would include all available means of voting including by phone, paper ballots, etc.:, as you suggest.
Below is a copy of an old email of mine that explains things:
Global Online Democracy (G.O.D.) ( Aug 25, 2004, 04:58:59 ) Dear Miguel:
Open Source is the ticket to Global Online Democracy, direct and decentralized. All we need is a program that will allow people to suggest simply worded laws on a website, propose to rescind laws, or vote on them. A program that will identify the person and ensure one person one vote with no corruptible human input.
A small positive majority vote would make the suggested law a postulate. A larger one would make it an axiom, then theorem, etc. until it became law. Until G.O.D. is realized, it would give a large voting block lots of bargaining power within the system.
The Swiss direct democratic Canton system of weekly town meetings, temporary spokespersons and no paid professional politicians has given them the highest per capita income in the world. Is't it time we emulate it globally online?
I doubt if there is any money to be made with G.O.D. software, but how much is a prosperous, peaceful and free society worth?
P.S. Check out the Swiss Canton System if you haven't already. They've had no wars for over 150 years, no boom and bust economy, little crime and unemployment, no immigration problems and a healthy environment as well. G.O.D. is the Swiss system on steroids, applied globally through modern communications.
best regards,
Ren
If getting rid of sell out politicians isn't an attractive enough option, how about deciding direct democratically where your tax dollars should go? Or even how much taxes if any, should anyone pay?
Also, let's not confuse online voting with corruptible voting machines. If we can safely pay our taxes, buy stuff with our credit cards online and if the internet is safe enough for banks, corporations and the Pentagon, it can be made safe enough for online government. Rapid voting on changing legislation in a completely decentralized way to fit the faster changing times is the way of the future. No system is completely immune to hackers, but compared to voting machines and corruptible politicians, direct online democracy is as safe as can be.
Government is corrupt and unresponsive. Let's take it back.
