Former
US Senator Vows to End the War on Drugs, Abolish the Income Tax, Guarantees
Right of Return to Katrina Victims
June 29, 2007
WASHINGTON D.C. – Former US Senator and current Democratic Presidential candidate
Mike Gravel appeared at the Howard University Presidential forum and wasted no
time in laying out his domestic agenda. Gravel began the evening discussing his
plan to end the war on drugs.
Presidential
candidate and former U.S. Senator Mike Gravel will be speaking at a forum for
Democratic candidates sponsored by PBS at Howard University on June 28 at 9
p.m. The debate will be moderated by well-known PBS talk-show host and New York
Times best-selling author Tavis Smiley and will be aired live on PBS stations
across the country.
"It looks as though the organizers of this forum responded to previous
debates where moderators appeared to favor particular candidates," said
Senator Gravel. "I applaud the fact that they have gone out of their way
to try to be fair and impartial."
At this Thursday's forum, the podium arrangement will have already been set by
randomly drawing names from a hat. In addition, the questions posed to
candidates will be asked in a pre-determined sequence to ensure that all
candidates get equal time.
The focus of the forum will be on issues that affect all Americans including
health care, affordable housing, crime and justice, Katrina relief, the economy
and the environment. All of the candidates have agreed to attend.
So tune in tonight to hear the Senator debate his plan for America!

Mike Gravel, a resident of Virginia, is a former two-term U.S. Senator from
Alaska with a distinguished record that includes successfully ending the
military draft with a five-month filibuster. He also released The Pentagon
Papers, risking both prosecution and jail; played the leading role in making
the Alaska pipeline a reality; and ended nuclear weapons testing in the seabed
off Alaska. He is the driving force and author of the National Initiative for
Democracy, a proposal to allow Americans to participate in making laws at the
federal level.
During one of the debates I mentioned that my fellow Democratic candidates scare me. Hillary's speech last week to the Take Back America conference gives me yet another reason to be afraid.

U.S. SENATOR MIKE GRAVEL
(Democrat, Alaska, 1969-1981)
The nation has awaited breathlessly for the “Oracle of Houston” – James Baker – to advise us how to extricate the nation from the disaster of the ‘Bush War’ in Iraq.
by Senator Mike Gravel
The United States is the largest economic unit in the world. Responsible stewardship of our economy requires that we maintain our superpower status, not only in terms of military capability, but in equally important areas such as the strength and solvency of our economy, the educational and physical health of our population, and a firm commitment to our moral principles and spiritual values. Strength in all these areas is vital to maintain our superpower status.
October
26, Manchester, NH – Democratic Presidential candidate and former
United States Senator Mike Gravel announced today that he will make a
major foreign policy address at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics
of St. Anselm College on Wednesday, November 1st at 7:00 PM.
The
Senator said, "In the last 40 odd years, national administrations of
both American political parties have led the United States into two ill
advised adventures; the first in Vietnam and the second in Iraq at a
terrible cost in American, Vietnamese and Iraqi lives as well as in
American treasure and prestige throughout the world. While one can
argue indefinitely how similar or dissimilar the reasons were for the
launching of the two wars by our nation, there is no denying that both
enterprises shared two common characteristics; the galactic ignorance
by our policy makers and foreign policy elites of the cultures, forces,
aspirations, interests and needs of the targeted nations and the utter
lack of a coherent and accurate view of the world situation."
The
Senator continued, "On November 1st I will unveil the beginnings of
what I believe to be a realistic and pragmatic approach in guiding our
nation in meeting the challenges of this dangerous and tumultuous
world. My foreign policies will be based on over a half century of
scholarship, travel, experience and the humble understanding that it
can sometimes take a lifetime to understand a single region, let alone
the entire community of nations."
Gravel concluded, "We seek to
restore trust in America¹s leadership, restore bi-partisan support for
our approach and use an aggressive and insightful diplomacy which will
be infinitely more influential and successful than military coercion in
managing the forces of instability."
