Popular blog Monsters and Critics recounted Mike's recent appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher, highlighting some of the best commentary during the show.
"Fred Thompson got his too. 'By God, that’s the guy from Gucci gulch, a K-street lobbyist,' snapped Gravel.
'Politics as usual,' finished Gravel, noting the whole pickup truck
ruse that Thompson's using to promote his phony, 'I’m a regular guy too
image,' that rubs just about everyone the wrong way. " 'Empowering the people -- the sovereigns -- that's what
is important … empower people to make laws, and when we can do that you
will see all of this dissipated,' said Gravel."

just saw your comments on msnbc. you should think before you respond to the questions. pulling the troops out of iraq and getting off of carbon based fuels willl not be seen in our lifetime.
it's very concerning that in this day and age that you have no grasp on what is happening and how to solve the problems of the nation.

Submitted on September 10th, 2007 by xawesomexelixWhat is your assumption that Mike is unaware of what is happening? Did you simply join the site just to say that? That's fine, but have a constructive argument to go along with your statements. Why don't you see carbon based fuels in our lifetime? How old are you, because unless you're going to die in the next 5 or so years, then I understand but other than that, I think you're greatly misinformed.
Before deciding to simply bash Mike Gravel's opinions and goals, back up your words please because you end up sounding like a conceited buttmunch.
Excuse my language.

Your conclusions must be the result of
1. your support for the occupation in Iraq and for the nation's dependence on oil and your chagrin that there are some "few" others who disagree with you and may manage somehow yet to defeat your wishes, or
2. your belief that you, poor sniveling worm that you are, can have no effect on national policy.
I urge you give up your dreams of dominion, if for no other reason than that they are unrealizable and doomed to failure if you are in position 1; or to look in the mirror every morning and repeat "I am somebody!" to yourself, and to cast out friends and acquaintances who reinforce your own self-hatred if you are in position 2.

Times have changed. We are going to empower the American people. Let’s work together. I am tough. I’m not afraid. None of this politics as usual. Mike GravelYour attitude determines your altitude
Submitted on September 6th, 2007 by k1mgyWhen an off-duty DC-10 training captain heard the loud bang from the rear of the airplane he knew that there was trouble. So captain Dennis Fitch went to the flight deck to help and there found a crew struggling to keep their airplane under control. The center engine in the tail had failed catastrophically and sent shards of metal flying everywhere. Bad fortune resulted in that all three hydraulic lines (all independent systems) were severed in the tail section. This left the airplane with no means of flight control. Fortunately when the engine exploded they were in straight and level configuration!
Captain Fitch and the rest of the crew knew that in all likelihood their airplane would end up creating a rather large hole in some cornfield and send them all to a quick but violent end. While they still had an airplane that was flying, two good engines, and a clearheaded crew, there was no reason to give up.
And so Denny Fitch refused to give up. Fitch and the flight crew devised a means of turning the airplane using differential thrust control, something that was never done before except on paper.
They made it to the airport, managed a remarkably conventional approach (except fast and with a high rate of descent), touched down "on the numbers", but skewed right. The hard hit on the runway broke the airframe into three pieces. In the end the crew (except for one flight attendant) survived as did more than half of the passengers.
Fitch, interviewed after the incident, shared something I will never forget and I ask that all readers of Mike's blog put this to memory:
"Your attitude determines your altitude. If you think you can't, you won't."
Fitch believed "with every fiber of my being" that the airplane would make it.
A true leader maintains a positive attitude and wisely ignores those who face challenges by giving up before they even try. Mike Gravel cannot single-handedly solve our problems, but collectively, WE CAN. Mike is the leader with the wisdom, moral fiber, courage, and positive outlook who can help drive us forward to solving the serious problems our nation and world face. Those who say "unlikely" or "it's impossible" or "not in our lifetime" represent defeatism.
I believe that we can do a great deal of good. With the right national leader our accomplishments as a nation can be extraordinary.
Let's carry this attitude forward and inspire other Americans with a positive "can do" message and our positive "can do" candidate.

c. the government has been heavily borrowing from the chinese goverment and raiding the social security fund just to bankroll the immoral iraq war
d. the war on iraq has been siphoning off attention from the homefront where there's a creeping recession that threathens to develop into full-blown depression . . .

Welcome to the "I've Been So Brainwashed By The Bush Administration, I Cannot See Beyond War And Occupation" Club. I can most assuredly tell you that Mike Gravel thinks before he speaks, especially on the subject of troop withdrawal. The problem for many Americans is that 6+ years of being lied to by the Bush crime family have made a serious dent in their ability to think differently...to step outside the box...to imagine a world where the most powerful president thinks about peace every day instead of war. Just because the war-mongering neocons have set this perpetual war game in motion doesn't prevent an enlightened human being from coming along and calling the game. A vote for Mike Gravel means peace, not war; aggressive diplomacy, not occupation. Gravel rocks!
