Statement on the Resignation of Alberto Gonzales

Senator Gravel is very pleased to hear that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has finally decided to resign. “For far too long Gonzales’s incompetence and mendacity have left the Justice Department without true leadership,” Gravel said. “His congressional testimony into the wiretapping scandal made it obvious that either Gonzales was a liar or a fool. In either case he had no business being the highest criminal justice official in America.”

The Senator hopes that President George Bush will look outside his administration for a replacement and dismisses the suggestion that DHS Chief Michael Chertoff could lead the Justice Department successfully. “Chertoff is yet another Bush crony who proved his incompetence in the wake of Hurricane Katrina,” added Gravel.

“Gonzales has trashed the Geneva Conventions by providing legal cover for our military and intelligence community to torture at will around the world," said Gravel. "He has hurt this country morally and razed its good name. The true extent of damage inflicted on our country by Gonzales and this administration will not be known for many years to come."

thanks

Thanks for the heads-up; great interview.

Its certainly welcome news

Its certainly welcome news to see that Gonzales will be gone in a couple of weeks. However, the Unconstitutional wire tapping programs put in operation and granted carte blanche by capitulating Democrats and Republicans are still hard at work stealing your civil liberties.

Gonzales granted Bush's wish for secret wire tapping has allowed the NSA unfettered access to invade the privacy of American citizens. Day and night this unregulated agency uses super computers to data mine your phone calls, emails, IM's and assemble a detailed portrait of your tastes/interests/friends/business dealings without your permission or oversight.

This clearly breaks our 4th Amendement Right of our Constitution guaranteeing privacy from unreasonable search and seizure by the government without a warrant.

Although the government claims that it is spying on Al Queda and terrorists networks, it really is playing Americans as fools. Why? because Osama bin Laden gave up his satellite phone years ago when it was reported in a newspaper that the electronic signal was being used to track his movements and monitor his communication.

Having learned about the dangers of electronic surveillance, he has videos hand delivered to Al Jazeera, uses word of mouth to his local soldiers, passes paper notes along the network, and relies on anonymous coded words on internet postings to communicate anonymously and pass along information worldwide without using email. Al Quaeda is smart and careful and this is just one of the ways OBL evades capture.

So who is the NSA spying program targeting? Its targeting you and me. Your mom and your sister. Your cousin and your friend and Mike Gravel. Its tracking you electronically when you use your cell phone or send an email or visit "risque" website or are typing a comment like this one.

Even with Gonzales gone, the danger to our personal protected privacy is real and extreme. Will the government admit they are spying on you? Of course not! There is no oversight or public right for access and transparency. Should there become one, they can block it by using the code: "National Security" or hide it within their system for later retrieval.

For those who are interested in the NSA's activities I recommend James Bamford's books including "Body of Secrets" visiting the ACLU to review its lawsuit against the government for illegal wire tapping, and (more on the entertainment side) checking out the movie "Enemy of The State" starrring Gene Hackman and Will Smith to catch a glimpse into this secretive world of fully financed super spies.

The Problem of Honesty

A superb demonstration of why every American aware of the world we are in must support the Senator.

"His congressional testimony into the wiretapping scandal made it obvious that either Gonzales was a liar or a fool." I think one of the biggest problems people have in digesting Gravel and his message is the lack of Orwellian language which we have come to expect from politicians. Mike here captures clearly, in one sentence, the entire debacle of Gonzalez and the Judiciary Committee. I would only add that the Senator's conclusion is only strengthened by the testimony surrounding the prosecutor firings.

Gravel is just as succinct and plain talking with regards to American Imperialism and the military-industrial-Congressional complex. But in the United States of Amnesia, well-programmed drones dutifully mistake honesty for madness. The campaign Mike has undertaken is for more than just the Imperial Throne. He is seeking to break the spell which has for decades kept the American people safely away from public affairs. As we have gorged ourselves upon the harvested wealth of the globe for decades, many shady folks have stolen not just our government, but most of our civilization. With such thorough pollution of discourse, it seems well nigh impossible to convince people of the obvious facts in front of their faces. They are just too busy amusing themselves to death.
