I think Gravel should emphasize that the people will only be brought into a single branch of government, not all 3. Under those conditions, their ability to "oppress" the minority is no greater than the current legislative branch.

So called "majority" rule would not adopt any new power. There is majority rule within the legislative branch already. A select few individuals who represent not only their voter interests, but their OWN self-preservation and reputation. Direct democracy would expand legislative votes beyond a smaller population of 435 to a broader population of 50,000,000 with the same protections being observed. Vetoes and constitutional conflicts would STILL apply.

So, if that threat still exists, how is Direct Democracy a solution? To my mind, the threat of abuse is lessened under these conditions. It would be fairly expensive to lobby 50,000,000 legislators as opposed to 435. More than this, greed and self-interest would at least be in the interests of both the people AND the legislators since they would be one and the same. Greed and self-interest among 435 individuals who govern 300,000,000 citizens is a much more destructive force and there is very little chance that the greed of 435 individuals will result in benefits for the other 300 Million.

As for Iraq? The Iraq war resolution passed with 77-23 votes. That's a higher positive affirmation for the war than expressed by the citizenry. This is in SPITE of the citizenry not having access to the intelligence that was used to make a case for the war to the senate. Even with such a colossal mistake, where 65-75% of the population supported the war (with only the pro-war MSM as their source), they were LESS wrong than the elected representatives. Keep in mind that Americans live at a point in time where civic duty is at its bear minimum. They are not accountable for the power they give away. Put the power in their hands and they are accountable for every failure. This responsibility will serve to motive the public to inform themselves and take greater care when attempting to serve their self-interests.
