DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE MIKE GRAVEL TO GIVE KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT JEFFERSON COUNTY PRESIDENT’S DAY DINNER

Former U.S. Senator Mike Gravel (D-AK) will deliver the keynote address this weekend at the Jefferson County Presidents Day Dinner Sunday, February 11th in Watertown, WI.

Gravel, who is seeking the 2008 Democratic nomination for President, has been actively campaigning since he announced his candidacy last April. He most recently addressed the national delegates at the annual Democratic National Committee’s Winter Meeting where he denounced the Bush administration’s foreign policy and called for an immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

Senator Gravel is known for his one-man filibuster against the military draft during the Vietnam War which effectively forced the end of the draft in 1973. As a critic of the Vietnam War and government secrecy, Senator Gravel officially released the “secret” Pentagon Papers and facilitated their publication. His defiance occasioned a Supreme Court case, Gravel v. U.S, establishing the precedent that members of Congress cannot be bound by the official secrets of any presidential administration. He also forced an end to undersea nuclear weapons testing in Alaska, and initiated the national and global critique of nuclear power generation.

Also scheduled to speak are State Representative Andy Jorgensen, Wisconsin State Treasurer Dawn Sass, and State Supreme Court nominee Linda Clifford.

Dinner

I am the Chair of the Jefferson County Democratic Party and we were thrilled to have Sen. Gravel at our dinner. His speech was not the normal "fire up the Party" kind of speach. He presented what he feels should be done in Iraq and the mistakes that were made leading up to the war. He talked about where the future of the country is and how we can make ourselves better partners in the world. His message was well received. We are in a very Republican area but the local press covered his presentation. I am hoping the people in this area as well as the rest of the country take the time to find out more about Mike Gravel. I am sure they will be as impressed as I am.
