In the week after the first major Democratic debate, little-known candidate generates unprecedented attention on-line.
Following his remarkable performance at the first debate in South Carolina on April 26th, web-surfers flocked to Presidential hopeful and former Alaskan Senator Gravel's website (www.gravel2008.us) causing it to briefly shut down due to overwhelming traffic. "Bless our web team, they haven't slept in a week." said Gravel spokesperson Shawn Alexander Colvin.
Indeed, Gravel has started outperforming the more popular candidates on both sides of the political aisle on the Internet. According to CBS News, "on the Internet, Gravel is a sensation-a refreshing face amid a sea of cookie-cutter candidates seen as typical politicians."
Once Gravel's newfound base learned that the senator had yet to be invited to the June 3rd CNN-sponsored debate, supporters flooded CNN with phone calls and e-mails. Within 72 hours, Gravel had received his invitation to New Hampshire. "CNN phoned to say that we'd 'met the criteria' to attend," said Colvin.
Later that day, USA Today proclaimed that Mike Gravel was "soon to be a household name" and noted that the word "Gravel" had become the 15th most popular search on the Internet.
On Digg.com, a "new media" site where users post links to articles and then let other members of the "Diggnation" determine which stories deserve the most exposure, the two top items on last week's political page were about Mike Gravel.
And according to Alexa, an internet monitoring company, during the past week, Mike Gravel generated nearly twice as much traffic on the internet than Hillary Clinton and John Edwards, and three times as much traffic as Rudy Giuliani. For Senator Gravel, this represents a 1,614% jump in Internet traffic.
This isn't the first time a "long shot" candidate has enjoyed an explosion in popularity thanks to the Internet. In 2003, current Democratic party chairman Howard Dean was able to emerge from relative obscurity to mount a formidable challenge to his more established rivals with the help of "netroots" fundraising and blog activity on his "Dean for America" website.

To those of you who are offering constructive criticism, i encourage you to help join the campaign team. Start your local Gravel group if you can't find one. I'm sure the staff of the campaign is working as hard as they can, and could use all the help they can get. i too would love to see more videos in the near future. I'm sure there is more video of mike on the way.
I've email his campaign people
Submitted on May 18th, 2007 by ElliswonderI am a supporter of Mike Gravel. I am writing to you about the amazing latency involved in the website being update.
The specific complaints are as follows.
1) Why are the videos/audio clips of Mike's appearances not being updated as soon as they happen ? Either on the YouTube(gravel2008) website or the www.gravel2008.us website ? Some times they are not posted at all, and it is left to forum members to provide links to them.
2) Mike's legislative plan to stop the war in Iraq. There have been repeated requests on the forums to post a copy of the draft as a pdf for the forum members to read. Some of us might call/alert our congressmen/senators and pressure them to support it.
3) The supporters have repeatedly asked for Mike's appearance schedule. To take a quote:
"Posting Mikes schedule? Whats he been up to since the debates? The Colbert report and a couple radio shows? What are his upcoming events? It wouldn't cost to post this on the site and I cant see any drawback to doing so." http://www.gravel2008.us/?q=node/991#comment-3433
To put things in context, the polls have not registered Mike getting any share of support, and the main stream media makes a joke out of him. I, along with many others feel that is it crucial for him at the least MAINTAIN the support that he does now possess. We need feedback. One important way to do this is to have a frequently updated website and keep us informed. It is currently performing well below the level that it needs to.
If you look to the forums, you will see that I am far from being the only one who's upset about this. We see Mike is our only hope for a better America, and a better world, and the website is not doing his campaign any justice.
I look forward to your reply.
Warm Regards,
E Wonder

Gravel vs. Paul
Submitted on May 8th, 2007 by thuntAn_open_letter_regarding_the_2008_Presidential_Election_Gravel_vs_Paul
Ensuring that independent political candidates win both nominations for the major parties is the only way to ensure the election of an independent candidate in 2008. As they ran Bush vs. Kerry, so now if we wish to save our democracy, we must run Ron Paul (R) vs. Mike Gravel (D) in the 2008 Election."First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.” -- Ghandi

Submitted on May 8th, 2007 by Elliswonder....it'll stay that way. It'll be two weeks tomorrow since his South Carolina peformance and you people who are running his campaign have done NOTHING significant since then. The inclusion of gravel2008 page on YouTube on the YouChoose08 page for Gravel was due to us suppporters from the internet. The campaign to get him to speak at the CNN debate on June the 3rd was due to us emailing various people. What have YOU, the people with direct contact with Mike done ? Not a DAMN thing.
Where are the videos ? NOTHING since South Carolina.
Did Mike get a video to thank us for our donations? NO ! (Mike is I'm sure appreciative but don't you think a video on gravel2008 would have gone down well with us ?)
We are his base. Which don't just include Americans !
You are kidding, right?
Submitted on May 8th, 2007 by ed3839You are joking, right? Do you realize just how much everything costs? Yeah, they could post videos on the website, but more bandwidth costs more money, and unlike the MILLIONS the media-darling candidates have to spend, Gravel has closer to thousands. This is going to be a long campaign, and we are still in the first stages of it. Money must be conserved where it can, so it can be spent where it is NEEDED, not on a "thank you" video. I donated $50 myself (I wish I could have afforded more) and I am sure Mike and his campaign are grateful for every penny. Do you really need to be "thanked" to satisfy your ego? I hope not, so lets keep things positive. This campaign simply doesn't have the resources to spend for the press coverage (Did you think news companies cover canidates out of the goodness of their hearts? Or to give fair and equal coverage? Hell no... they want their cut of the "election business").
The "top-tier" candidates are not chosen by their popularity with the people. They are chosen by the media, as they are the ones that can pay for the coverage.
Okay lets assume that
Submitted on May 8th, 2007 by Elliswonder...you're right.
1) "More bandwidth costs more money."
It doesn't need to be on the gravel08.us website. Just on the gravel2008 page on YouTube. FREE.
2) "Money must be conserved where it can, so it can be spent where it is NEEDED, not on a 'thank you' video".
Nonsense. I've got a video out back. I'll turn it on, say what I need to say, and upload the video to YouTube.
3)"Thanks You" a waste of money.
The reality of the world is that, when you help someone, it's common courtesy to be thanked. Someone holds the door open for you, usually you say thank you - and hopefully mean it. Its common courtesy. Add the fact that we are donating, because we want him elected, and know that it's been useful. 60 seconds ? Simple thank you ? Look, it was a suggestion. It's your strategy, you can do as you like. I've already explained how to do this for free.
Since we don't see very much of Mike on MSM, don't you think that he shouldn't remove himself from the internet as well.
Maybe I'm being harsh. Maybe. But I don't think I'm the only one who's feeling like this. Ultimately you people directly in contact with him will have to decide.
Agreed.
Submitted on May 8th, 2007 by JlauI also gotta say, the principle of a "thank you" video is a great idea. It's not so much about reciprocity as it is evidence of a person's ability to influence power. In this case, Mike is the man of the hour and for him to address the community directly would just build on the idea that he is a man for the people.
Having very short daily Q&A sessions with Sen. Gravel over youtube would solve a LOT of problems. Right now his base is seen as "fringe", outside voters. If the base is discounted, then the message is weakened. To set things up, put up an "Open Mike" section where registered users can post their questions to Sen. Gravel. Screen for the questions that not only apply to the "moderate" voters, but also come from people who fit neatly into the "moderate" image. Occasionally, addressing a "fringe" question or two will make some people extremely satisfied. Answer at least one question a day. They don't necessarily have to do with the current campaign. The sole purpose is to flesh out Sen. Gravel's character as well as the identity of his base. From what I've seen, Gravel is quite comfortable with questions from all over the place. He's frank, straightforward, and doesn't waste any time. A daily Q&A should take less than ten minutes, from screening the questions to answering the video, and finally uploading. His 10 minutes of effort will result in perhaps a 5 minute video that thousands of individuals will spend an aggregate thousands of hours watching. That's daily.
I'm certain Mike's budget has increased, but I don't think he's had the time to hire people into the campaign that can take advantage of a strategy like this. I honestly don't see the need to have too many strategy sessions about the internet. Given the output of his counterparts in McCain and Kucinich, Mike could certainly bring home a stronger message. This is something Mike can do himself just before hitting the hay every night. If he can make it a habit, then I don't doubt his base will increase not only in numbers, but in diversity.
edit: oh ya, this is all low cost. Aside from the initial setup of the "open Mike" page along with a decent webcam, the only running cost would be 10 minutes of Sen. Gravel's time every day.
I hate to say it
Submitted on May 8th, 2007 by RMarcantonioI hate to admit it but I agree with some of what Elliswonder is saying. I dont really care about a thank you video but it does feel to me like the campaign staff is not taking full advantage of this sudden momentum. To continue the surge we need to take advantage of the enthusiam that has been created right away before it starts to wane.
I completely understand that items requiring money are still a 'work in progress' and that quite possibly the campaign staff has been caught offguard by the response since the debates. Regardless of this though, we as supporters should be getting more feedback at this stage.
Lets assume that items requiring large campaign funds are off the table at the moment, what about making information available to us on the stuff that doesnt cost money such as:
Posting Mikes schedule? Whats he been up to since the debates? The Colbert report and a couple radioshows? What are his upcoming events? It wouldnt cost to post this on the site and I cant see any drawback to doing so.
Make a post listing all of the State Coordinators for volunteer/grassroots efforts. I noticed a post where Alex replied today listing the contact email for the state of CA effort? Why not have a blanket posting listing the states coordinator, and the states that still need a coordinator. We need to strike now, while the iron is still hot. People are motivated to help now and we need to make this as easy as possible to get involved. If you have complied this information it should be available in an easily accessable place on the website.
List out some specific goals for us Everybody has their own ideas of what to do, what works best and should be applauded as these efforts all will help but, I would strongly encourage the campaign to list out some 'preferred' forms of spreading the word/fundraising. What does the Gravel campaign believe will best maximize our efforts and your exposure? You want us to do house partys? Write our local paper? Organize local fundraisers? What? Doing this is the first step towards allowing the efforts of the people to dovetail with the campaigns strategy. Mix in the media schedule for Mike and the peices can start to fall into place. For example, say I want to organize a small dinner fundraiser for the Senator, if I knew what nights he was speaking on I could plan around this, have the fundraiser the same night or next day and then pump people for the $$ right after they have been inspired by the Senators latest speech. Its about being the most effective with what we have. Giving us the tools is one thing, but advising us on how to use them is what will make us most effective.
We have a long road to go and it is going to require some traditional politics as well if we want to reach as much of the voting base/american public as possible. The internet is and will continue to be the driving force on this campaign but we cant entirely abandon the 'tried and true' methods of exposure/fundraising.
Lets increase the level of communication. Your supporters are eager to hear what is going on. Every day that goes by the effectiveness of your strong performance in South Carolina fades a little more into the background. What you did yesterday was great. but what are you doing today and tomorrow?
Help us to help you Senator, together we can take back America.
Open Mike

These all sound reasonable AND effective.
Superb Post
Submitted on May 8th, 2007 by ElliswonderYou've crystallized the things I've been trying to get at. We need to see some direct feedback. How things are going for Mike. Good, bad whatever just to see the road ahead and possible obstacles.
Where's the feedback ?
RMarcantonio good suggestions as well.
I agree, while urging patience
Submitted on May 9th, 2007 by doglesThese are all really great ideas. I think that it is correct that Sen. Gravel needs to show the side of his platform that appeals to moderates and even conservatives. I think that maybe the iron will not cool quite as fast as EllisWonder anticipates, if only because Gravel will be introducing his Iraq bill and will be debating on June 3rd in New Hampshire. However, I think that the "we are just getting started" excuse won't quite hack it if the online portion of the campaign still lacks direction and the grassroots campaign isn't on the ground and running before June. There will be a lot of people wanting to check out Sen. Gravel's campaign, and having an unorganized "work in progress" feel will simply reinforce the long shot characterization that Mike will have to fight from now until January.
I think that maybe some of these concerns would be abated if the Gravel campaign tries even harder to establish some transparency among supporters... at least this early on. I think if people saw everything going on behind the scenes (and that does include schedules, planned updates, a set of goals, etc.) we would be even more encouraged to contribute our time and money.
Lastly, I love the idea of a 2 minute Open Mike. (YouTube viewers dont always have the patience to sit through ten minutes, and it would be easier to link back to in case someone had a question about a specific topic.) Cute title.

Let's stay focused for now...
Submitted on May 8th, 2007 by NYForGravelElliswonder,
I can see where you are coming from and why you may be frustrated. However, remember that it has only been two weeks since many in America have ever heard of Mike. He needs to focus capitalize on every inch of that momentum. Additionally, he has also promised to introduce skeleton legislation to criminalize our occupation in Iraq by Monday.
Mike is putting a human face and his public reputation on the line for our interests. Note that NO candidate has ever acknowledged the influence of the Military industrial complex and its influence on US culture DURING a presidential debate. The last person, to my knowledge, to take on this runaway train was JFK.
We get to hide in anonymity on the internet while Mike goes in front of the cameras and gets his life ripped apart by a ruthless mainstream media whose self-interest is to maintain the status quo and mislead the public.
We must fight for every inch of time for Mike to stay in this race as evidenced by the fact that he was originally excluded from the NH debate. There will be time to enjoy our spoils soon enough...hell, I'll even buy you a beer when this is over.
Let's trust that Mike and his direct team appreciate us and our efforts. However, we should also not think of ourselves as constituents/observers right now, but as part of Mike's extended team. We are shaping his message and his campaign, we are his marketing force. I'm sure he knows this and appreciates it.
Now that Mike realizes that he isn't in this race just to promote the National Initiative but to promote an entire set of ideals and policies, he needs to scale his campaign infrastructure accordingly. Let's give him some time.
Take care.
