After debate, little-known Democrat draws a crowd

ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Until the first Democratic presidential debate here on Thursday night, former senator Mike Gravel campaigned in almost total obscurity since becoming the first Democrat to declare more than a year ago, in April 2006.

But all that changed with a few provocative remarks from the stage of South Carolina State University with his seven better-known rivals looking on.

He said the early leading Democratic candidates "frightened" him because they had taken nothing off the table, including nuclear weapons, for possible military action against Iran.

"Tell me, Barack, who do you want to nuke?" he asked Senator Barack Obama of Illinois.

"I'm not planning on nuking anybody right now, Mike," Obama replied.

"Good, then we're safe for a while," Gravel said.

He accused candidate Joseph Biden Jr., the Delaware senator, of having "a certain arrogance" in dictating to Iraqis how to run their country.

Biden hit back, saying Gravel was living in "happy land."

Yesterday, Gravel said his debate appearance gave a public that does not know him or his record "a taste of the kind of leadership I can provide." He spoke by telephone from San Diego, where he flew immediately after the debate to address the California Democratic Convention yesterday.

"What will make a difference in this campaign is not money, it's not celebrity, it is a person who is prepared to tell the American people the truth," he said. "The people are fed up and as president I will do a 180 and move this country in the opposite direction."

A native of Springfield, Mass., Gravel served two terms in the Senate, representing Alaska from 1969 to 1981 . He made his mark as a fierce Vietnam war critic who staged a one-man filibuster that led to the end of the military draft. He drafted legislation to end funding for the war and released the Pentagon Papers, which detailed government deception over Vietnam, at the end of June 1971.

The Nixon administration decided not to prosecute Gravel for having Beacon Press in Boston publish the papers, though the US Supreme Court ruled that Gravel could release them only inside the Capitol, based on the Constitution's speech and debate clause.

Gravel today is a fierce critic of the Iraq war and government secrecy.

"This war was lost the day that George Bush invaded Iraq on a fraudulent basis," he said in the debate. Believing that Congress has the power to both declare and end wars, he called for a law to end the war.

"He's the one to say not only that the emperor has no clothes, but that the emperor wannabes have no clothes," said national pollster John Zogby, adding, "There is an angry voter. I don't know how that will take shape, it's way too early. But you got a sense why Mike Gravel is in the race on Thursday and that he is in the race."

The reaction to Gravel's performance has overwhelmed his campaign. His aides said they got more requests for interviews yesterday than in the first 12 months of the campaign.

Gravel's website could not handle the flood of hits after the debate, they said. Bloggers complained that they were ready to donate money but were unable to get into the website .

"He started out with less money than the cost of a John Edwards haircut," said Elliott Jacobson, Gravel's national finance director.

Gravel told reporters after the debate: "We stayed in a $55 motel. I'll hitchhike to the next debate if I have to."

Earlier this month, Gravel returned home to Arlington, Va., from a campaign appearance in New York on a $25 ticket on Van Moose bus lines. He had spoken at the Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network candidates' forum, sharing the stage with Senator Hillary Clinton and Obama -- both of whom have already raised more than $20 million each.

Gravel said he decided to run for president because of his anger over Iraq. Friends urged him to use the campaign to also push two policy goals: direct democracy and a revamped federal tax code.

Gravel advocates a constitutional amendment and a federal statute establishing legislative procedures for citizens to make laws through ballot initiatives .

He also supports the Fair Tax, which would eliminate the Internal Revenue Service and corporate and individual income taxes, replacing them with a 23 percent national sales tax on all new goods and services. Each month, taxpayers would receive a check to offset the tax on basic items such as food and medicine.

"People are talking about him," Zogby said. "And they are going to hear from him over the next few months as long as he's got money for a bus ticket."

Why I won't support Mike Gravel for President.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally trreasonable to the American public." Theodore Roosevelt

I watched the debate with great interest and was very pleased with what I saw and heard of Mike Gravel ... until the question was asked about supporting Rep. Kusinich's impeachment bill.

Senator Gravel had a perfect opportunity to establish himself as a courageous and honest alternative to politics as usual.

A genuine outspoken maverick would have stepped up to the plate.

But Mike Gravel stood there like a bump on a log!

If this was a character test, he failed it just as badly as the other career politicians on that stage!

That's why I've changed my mind about supporting him.

Cnn debate

Dear All Mike Gravel supporters,

Mike should be included in the upcoming debate on CNN. If you want to help, please call Jim Walton, President of CNN Newsgroup, personally in his office at 404-878-1720. If enough people call, which I and many of my friends already have, maybe theyll change their minds. Please post this number as many places as you can so we can get a high call volume.

Go Gravel!

CNN

I sent an email to CNN. Also, on youtube, one of your videos (from S.C. debate) made it to the top 100 weekly videos (most watched - category 'All'; over 90,000 views as of now). This is important as people do go to most watched movies and only top 100 are shown. Now, I would suggest to the moderators of this site to use the videos they have (ESPECIALLY the one from winter democrat convention), upload them to youtube and link them to the popular S.C. debate video I mentioned above - links are done as 'respond to this movie'.

I hope you consider this suggestion - I have not heard of you until 2 days ago and the nation's reaction to you is amazing!!! Still BBC opted to consider Clinton and Biden as "clear winners" of the debate - I wonder what debate they watched...? You do have a chance.

My Letter to the Boston Globe

To the Editor:

On April 25th you published a story about how Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are the only candidates who will not be participating in the New Hampshire Democratic debate on June 3rd. (“Clinton, Obama only Dems not pledged for N.H. debate”) However, there is a third candidate who also won’t be there—not because of “scheduling conflicts”—but due to media censorship. His name is Mike Gravel.

Gravel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts and served in the United States Army from 1951 until 1954. As a United States Senator from the state of Alaska in 1971, Gravel was responsible for making public an extensive volume of the Pentagon Papers, and he also conducted a five-month-long filibuster that successfully prevented the continuation of the military draft.

This past week, Gravel appeared in a debate along with all of the other Democratic presidential candidates in South Carolina. However, earlier this year the sponsors of the N.H. debate (WMUR-TV, the Union-Leader newspaper, and CNN) announced that Gravel would not be invited to participate in June. Given his many patriotic contributions to our country, it is outrageous that Mr. Gravel's voice will not be heard. With the general election more than a year and a half away, this sort of media censorship does a terrible disservice to our democratic process.

You have support, Sir. "We are with you!"

Sir,

I donated earlier, and I'm going to donate again. You mentioned that you would "walk" to the campaigns if you had too. You need a ride? We'll get you there. You need a place to stay, one of us will give the hotel a Visa! We're gonna see you through this thing, Sir!

Eli, Iraqi Veteran

Cheney

I have seen postings on the E-Mails I have been getting saying:

Cheney better know as the soldier, marine, sailor, and airman killer.

If the Republicans don't start to bring home the troops soon they are going to be know as the soldier, marine, sailor, and airman killers.

Would you ever use this in your campaign??? Yes or No

FOR Kucinich, Richardson, Clinton, Biden, Obama, Edwards, Dodd, and Gravel

Damnit, you better persevere!

Maurice (Mike), you had better hang in this race. I refuse to not vote, and I do not want to waste my vote on some "tow the party line" zombie. You have my vote, if you can only hang in there. I just donated 250$ to you, and will donate more later. You know the "establishment" is going to give you next to nothing on air-time, and all the other dirty tricks. Hopefully, the power of the people will prevail. Good luck, and damnit you better win.

One Man at Valley Forge with Faith

You already have the entire American Nation behind you. My inability to send a check is overpowered by the result if I don't. If you can sacrifice, so can I.

God Bless You and thank you for saving my beloved country.

We need you. With every good wish, I remain,

Yours Faithfully,

Greg Green

Maine

Thank you for running!

You say so many things that absolutely need to be said and which are not being said by the other Democratic contenders who seem to be more concerned with their "electability" than with the welfare of our Nation!

Your voice will make a valuable contribution and, hopefully, will compell and inspire the other candidates to come to grips with reality.

Thank you for the service you are doing to the Democratic Party and our country.

Keep it up

Mike, your voice is needed and I certainly am proud that you are finally being noticed and it appears we will need to use the internet to get your message out there as it seems the main stream media is locked on campaign $$$$$  rather than clear and fresh messages such as yours.  I applaud your continued pushing of truth and clarity around the main issues facing all of us. The public is being poorly informed and the Bush gang is so loud and consistent in peddling fear and threats.......we must take back the message and talk about what "could be".......under your leadership.

Military-Industrial Complex

Before the debate I had never heard of Mike. For the past 2-3 months I have been doing a lot of research online about the general direction of our government since Eisenhower left office and Kennedy was killed. Since that time in our history this country has pursued a certain agenda. This is what Eisenhower warned the people of as he left office. He was fully aware of the kind of people that surrounded him within the government, and he was warning us and incoming President Kennedy about them. Kennedy was taken out shortly after, and since then this country has witnessed the rise of the force that Eisenhower talked about. It tried to take over by scaring the people about Communism in order to take on a global war, and now it has scared the people about Terrorism in order to take on a global war. All the while, it has been invisible to the American people. Please watch "Why We Fight" on youtube.com and read more on sites like wikipedia.org. Eisenhower told us that "only an alert and knowledgable citizenry" can fight the power of the military and industrial machinery of this country. This is not a new concept; just one that has been suppressed from public debate for the last 50 years.  I support you Mike. I was blown away to hear you say almost everything I had found out on my own. I was frustrated with the other candidates because I felt I had to go with one and hope for the best, but now I have a candidate who represents my views. Thank you for your courage.

Damn RIGHT He's Angry !! SO AM I !!

Anyone who ISN'T angry,

just isn't paying ATTENTION !!

I've been angry since that spoiled little twit stole the first election,

then his Daddy and his cronies pulled another fast one and attacked us on 9/11 !

THEN they stole ANOTHER ELECTION !!

Between the audacity of blaming arabs who turned up alive,

or Osama, who isn't even wanted by the FBI for 9/11,

or hijackers whose names weren't even ON the passenger lists,

or mysteriously vanishing jets, AND BLACK BOXES,

or unprecedented perfect implosions of steel framed skyscrapers from kerosene fires,

or $2.3 TRILLION missing on 9/10,

or $167 BILLION missing from WTC after 9/11,

or NORAD missing throughout 9/11,

or WMD's missing from Iraq,

or Sadam not even being INVOLVED WITH 9/11,

.............SUCH A MOUNTAIN OF LIES,

and attacks on our rights, such a fascist manipulation of our government with illegal war, illegal wiretapping, no bid contracts for Halliburton ( Cheney ), Guantanamo torture, Abu Graib torture, violation of International War Crimes Act, Geneva Convention, and United Nations policies, a national debt for an illegal war that our children will have to pay their ENTIRE LIVES !!

DAMNED RIGHT HE'S ANGRY !!!!

SO THE HELL AM I !!!!

Who knew?

I never new who this guy was until I watched the debate video on "YouTube". I was impressed and hope he gains more attention. His views are not so "commercial/mainstream/bought". I like that.

Finally!!!!!!!!! A real candidate!!!!!!!

I have never heard of Mike Gravel until I watched the debates. Obviously, I was a little young at the time of the Vietnam War and the introduction of the Alaskan pipe-line to America and am just now getting into and understanding politics.

However, after watching, all I can say is WOW! A real candidate who is not afraid of telling it like it is and not tip-toeing around the current propagandist mainstream media we have in this country today. I love the thought of a president who refuses to push the PNAC and NWO and realize that all countries on this planet are as they are. Sovereign entities. We had no right to invade Iraq and I'm glad that someone is finally getting the message out! America 1st, 2nd, & 3rd! I am still tempted to vote for the Green party if the democratic party sweeps Mike and Kucinich off from the platform. After all, they will have failed America!

Let us hope this is not the case.

We need to get the word out!!!!!!

I've already begun to post the you tube comments and links to this web-site where ever I can.

Mike, you can once again make America great!

I LIKE MIKE!!!!!!!!!

We have been silent for so

We have been silent for so long, now it's time to let the world know the voice of real Americans!
